Hi, I'm

Aleksandar Pluskoski

PhD student working on reinforcement learning. Marathon runner. I build custom projects for myself — robots, schedulers, and whatever else I need.

01 About me

I'm a PhD student. My research is in reinforcement learning: how agents can learn many tasks at once, and how to combine specialised policies into one agent that does all of them well.

Outside the lab I run marathons. Long runs are where I think through problems, and race day is the payoff for months of steady training.

I also like to build things for myself. If a tool I want doesn't exist, I write it. That's how I ended up with an autonomous RC car, a custom real-time scheduler, and a pile of smaller experiments.

02 PhD research

My PhD codebase. It trains agents on several task families in the MiniGrid gridworld and compares ways to get a single agent that handles all of them:

  • Single-task and multi-task PPO baselines, plus fine-tuning a multi-task model on one task.
  • Policy distillation from task-specific experts into one student policy.
  • Mixture of Experts, which routes between specialist policies. It scored best on the combined benchmark (72% vs 65% for multi-task PPO).
  • LLM-driven agents running local models through Ollama, compared against the learned policies.
  • Hyperparameter search with custom Hydra sweepers for PBT, PB2 and DEHB.

03 Projects

Self-Driving Robot

Python

An autonomous RC car. It uses a Raspberry Pi for the camera stream, an Arduino for motor control, and OpenCV with a neural network trained on my own manual-driving data. It also has a Java (Spring + Netty) web dashboard for live control and video.

FreeRTOS Polling Server

C

A modified FreeRTOS kernel scheduler with a polling server added. It runs aperiodic tasks within a fixed capacity and period, next to the regular periodic real-time tasks.

Database Management System

Java

A Java desktop app for viewing and maintaining database tables and generating reports. It works with serial, sequential and indexed-sequential files, and I tested it on a database I designed for a fictional chain of stores.

LeetCode Problems

Java

My solutions to algorithm and data-structure problems, written as ongoing practice.
